Neuroscience Talk: Have we got depression wrong?

St Paul’s School invite WLP students to attend this online talk.

Have we got depression wrong? In research over the past three years, I’ve been exploring the possibility that what we think of as the characteristic symptoms of depression—low mood and motivation—are only part of the picture. Depression is a physical illness too, which involves changes in how we regulate our energy levels. This new perspective explains why mood and cognitive symptoms often overlap with common, but less well-known physical symptoms, like appetite, weight and sleep disturbances. As well as giving us a broader, improved understanding of what depression really is, this research has the fascinating implication that the mind and body are not as distinct as they are often made out to be.
