SPS Geography Sustainability Conference

The St Paul’s School Geography Department is excited to invite your pupils and teachers to the SPS Geography Sustainability Conference.

The event will be held on Tuesday 15th October starting at 6:00pm in the Dorfman Theatre at St Paul’s School.

Speaking on the night our panel of experts include:

Dr Matthew Blackett – Matthew is an Associate Professor in Physical Geography and Natural Hazards, with a research career that has focused on using remote sensing (mainly thermal) for the monitoring of GeoHazards (mainly volcanoes and earthquakes, but also urban heat islands and wildfires) via sensors found on NASA/ESA satellites. He has also worked more generally on geographical and interdisciplinary research projects involving the use of computing, programming, GIS and modelling, and is passionate to ensure that his scientific research is positively impactful for society. He will be discussing the role of AI in volcano prediction following a fascinating lecture at the Royal Geographical Society on this topic.

Kabir Bawa – Kabir is an OP who studied Management at KCL after leaving SPS. The majority of his work so far has been in politics and after leaving university he worked at the Conservative Research Department and led political data work at CCHQ. Kabir is very focused on the tech/AI space having previously worked at Palantir Technologies which specialises in big data for corporates and governments. He will be talking about the use of AI in International Relations and conflict zones.

SPS Student Presentation – Members of the school’s AI Society will be presenting on their interests and links between AI and Geography.

There will also be a recorded introduction to the Conference by Rory Stewart.

The evening will conclude no later than 7.45pm.
